Energy Minister Chris Bowen talked up how clean energy transition could create 600,000 new jobs at a summit with industry stakeholder groups.
The general consensus among stakeholders is that this goal is achievable if the right support is in place for the transition and developing the skills needed, according to Carbon Market Institute Chief Executive John Connor.
To overcome the government’s key reduction goal of 43 per cent by 2030, Mr Connor said we need to be “accelerating emission reductions and accelerating investments by this time”.
“We also need to be fundamentally building skills, especially in regional Australia,” he told Sky News Australia.
Mr Connor is confident these jobs will be there as long as the transition is managed efficiently.
